Ashton Bronx was a member of Counterveil Securities, an organization based out of Century City that cleans up after superpowered collateral damage, works with the government in containing superpowered criminals, and will give funding and resources to socially-minded metahumans willing to join their "powered agent program." He was a normal human, a non-powered agent who was among those who would clean up. When the government tried to instate a forced metahuman registration, Ashton was among several agents who went to work for the MRI--but as moles attempting to monitor the program.
Ashton was a member of a team of MRI troops that were cleaning out an MRI lab that the rebellious Century Sentinels broke into and demolished. As they cleaned up the mess and attempted to strip down the place before any more law enforcement arrived, several of them attempted to move an airtight, extremely compressed tank of acid. It burst, releasing acid, yes ... but then it took shape and introduced itself as Sulfuric. He had once been an MRI scientist, and then an accident had altered his state permanently. Then for said accident he had become a victim of the same regime he had once given his complete loyalty to.
Wasn't it funny ...? Wasn't it funny that a lab accident that by all logic should kill whoever involved always ends up creating a metahuman instead? This Sulfuric screamed and ranted as he burst every tank of chemicals and solution in the lab.
Just as he had said ... what should have killed every last man in the room ... ended up creating a meta. That lucky man was Ashton Bronx. The process and mixture of chemicals that turned him into a meta also warped his mind and put him in a schizophrenic state. Then Sulfuric looked down at him, and decided to keep him as a weapon, and as the only bridge he'd have to human contact. The two of them would find a way to take revenge on the MRI.
